Getting Legally Married

For a wedding to be legally valid in the UK, legal formalities must be completed though the Registration service at your local registry office, costing between £45- £60.

Couples are required to give their Registrar notice of their Intention to Marry.

The legal part can then be booked to take place any time before The Elegant Celebrant conducts your bespoke ceremony.

The marriage at the registry office takes approximately 20 minutes and requires that you have two witnesses present under the Marriage Act.

Once you have your Marriage Certificate then you are legally married and can celebrate this wonderful event afterwards wherever and however you choose.

Yorkshire Celebrant Wedding FAQs

Can a celebrant legally marry us in the UK?

No – in England, celebrants can’t conduct legal marriages. Most couples do the legal part at a registry office, then have a personalised and joyful celebrant ceremony on their special day.

How is a celebrant-led wedding different from a registrar?

Celebrant weddings are fully personalised – you can choose your location, vows, readings, rituals, and more. It’s all about you as a couple.

Can we include religious or cultural elements?

Yes – celebrant ceremonies can include any traditions, beliefs or rituals that are meaningful to you, or none at all. It’s completely flexible and can reflect your unique heritage and culture.

How far in advance should we book a celebrant?

As early as possible! Most couples book 6–18 months ahead, especially for popular summer dates but occassionally I do have dates open so don’t hesitate to get in touch about your event no matter the date.

Do you help us write our vows?

Absolutely – I offer guidance, templates, and support to help you craft vows that reflect your love and personality.

What is the difference between a marriage and a wedding?

A marriage contains the legal wording which enables the registrar to “pronounce” that you are husband and wife, wife and wife, husband and husband and you are given a marriage certificate. Helen is then free to write a wedding ceremony of celebration for you, without restrictions or formality written all about you and your family.

How many ceremonies do you take per day?

I will only ever commit to YOUR ceremony in one day – I am exclusively yours whereas registrars often have many ceremonies to deliver on one day.
