Hotel weddings have long been a popular choice for couples across Yorkshire, and it’s easy to see why. With beautiful interiors, professional staff and everything under one roof, hotels offer comfort and convenience. But just because a hotel is a traditional setting doesn’t mean your ceremony has to feel traditional in an identikit way.
As a celebrant who’s led wedding ceremonies in hotels throughout Leeds and wider Yorkshire, I’ve helped couples create wedding days that feel warm, joyful and completely their own. If you’re planning a hotel wedding, here are some ideas to make your ceremony feel personal and unforgettable.
Why choose a hotel wedding?
Hotels often come with helpful perks that simplify your planning. Most offer dedicated wedding coordinators, catering, accommodation and accessible spaces. Many also have elegant décor and beautiful ceremony rooms, whether you’re drawn to modern style or classic charm or the intimacy of boutique beauty.
For couples expecting guests from outside the area, hotels are a practical choice that also feel special. And with options ranging from boutique city hotels to grand country estates, there’s plenty of variety across Leeds, Harrogate, York and beyond.
Making a hotel wedding ceremony feel personal
Your ceremony is the heart of your wedding day. It is the very reason that your nearest and dearest are gathering – to show their love and support for you, as they witness your public declaration of love for each other. In a hotel setting, you might be working with a room that’s used for many weddings each year. The key is to bring in your personality so that it feels like your day, not just another event. You can customise your ceremony room with your choice of flowers; the layout of your chairs (you may choose to have them in lines, a semicircle or even “in the round”); and the placement of your musicians if you are having live music; your choice of scent for the room. All of these choices really reflect you and your personalities and set the tone for the day ahead.
As a celebrant, I work closely with each couple to craft a ceremony that reflects who they are. We’ll talk about your story, your values, and the kind of mood and ambience you want. That might mean writing your own vows, choosing music that means something to you, (perhaps, like Vicky and Matt, you will invite your guests to join you in singing your favourite song – they chose “Don’t Stop me now” by Queen, and it really got their guests smiling, foot-tapping and clapping!) or including a symbolic ritual like a candle lighting or hand fasting.
Using the space creatively
Hotel ceremony rooms can be more flexible than people think. Don’t be afraid to bring in florals or fabrics to soften the look, or create a focal point with an arch, backdrop or personal touches with candles, wedding newspapers on each chair with fun details about your day and the order of events, or, like Rhiannon and Luke are going to do in two weeks time, putting the cords for their hand fasting ceremony under random pews in the stunning Gothic chapel at Rudding Park so that nobody will know until that moment whether they will be “the chosen” ones to be involved in this symbolic element of their unique ceremony!
You could also make use of other areas of the hotel, such as garden courtyards, rooftop terraces or stylish lounges. Some hotels in Leeds, like Chevin Country Park Hotel in Otley have a picturesque lake and surrounding woodlands, or Bowcliffe Hall near Wetherby have spectacularly-quirky and photogenic gardens and lovely spaces that add variety and character to your day.
Tips for a smooth ceremony
- Check sound and lighting: Hotel rooms vary in size and acoustics. Ask about microphones, speakers and natural light. Remember that I have my own PA system which I always bring with me to our rehearsal to ensure excellent listening conditions for all, wherever they are sitting in your ceremony room.
- Add your own timeline: You don’t have to stick to a rigid schedule. As your celebrant, I can help shape the flow to suit your style.
- Include your guests: A hotel setting can still feel intimate if you include moments like a group blessing, wise words and wedding wishes to be written on arrival and posted in a special box by all, guest readings, a communal toast, or, as I have mentioned, a collective sing along or hymn.
- Work with the staff: Hotel teams are often very experienced, and we’ll work together to make sure everything runs smoothly from arrival to aisle. No stress or worry is allowed – you’re in safe and experienced hands!
A hotel wedding in Yorkshire can be classic, convenient and completely yours. With the right ceremony, even the most traditional setting can become a space full of emotion, laughter and love.
If you’re getting married in a hotel in Leeds or elsewhere in Yorkshire and want a ceremony that feels meaningful and memorable, I’d be delighted to help you make it truly special.
