There’s something truly special about getting married in a place that feels like home. Whether it’s your own back garden, a family member’s, or a rented countryside retreat, garden weddings in Yorkshire have a charm that’s hard to match. They’re personal, relaxed and full of character.
I’ve led garden weddings that were elegant and polished, as well as ones that were laid-back – but always, they are filled with laughter. The beauty of a garden wedding ceremony is that it can be whatever you want it to be. Here are some helpful tips to help you plan a beautiful and meaningful backyard wedding.
Choose the right space
Start by walking around the garden and thinking about where you’d like your ceremony to take place. Look for areas that feel spacious and level, with a nice backdrop for your vows. Trees, flower beds and stone walls can add natural beauty without the need for extra decoration. Check where the sun is shining at the time of your wedding so that it is at It’s optimum but not in your eyes or blinding your guests either! Tony and Katherine in Boston Spa and I did this for their garden wedding at their home in Boston Spa. We set up their ceremony space and then altered its orientation to make it completely comfortable for all – and perfect for the photographer to capture the best images of their special day, too. It is that attention to detail which can really make your day so very special, just as it should be!
If you’re planning a larger guest list, make sure there’s enough space for chairs, a ceremony area and room to move around comfortably.
Think about the time of day
Lighting plays a big role in creating atmosphere. Late afternoon or early evening often gives you the softest, most flattering light. If you’re planning a summer ceremony, consider some shade for you and your guests. Parasols, trees or a simple canopy can help everyone stay comfortable. But remember that trees can be noisy too – even with a gentle breeze blowing through the summer leaves, I always factor that in when I do the sound check at your rehearsal!
Evening ceremonies can be lovely too, especially with strings of fairy lights or lanterns to add a warm glow.
Prepare for the weather
This is Yorkshire, after all. While many garden weddings enjoy dry weather and sunshine, it’s always best to have a backup plan. A marquee or stretch tent gives you shelter while still keeping the outdoor feel. Even a few large umbrellas can make a big difference – perhaps you will ask your guests to bring their wellies if there is a chance that the ground will be soggy! (https;//www.evercreatures.co.uk or https://mylittleweddingshop.co.uk do fabulous wedding wellies – Jane wore some for her festival wedding in her garden in Huddersfield, and they were a fabulous talking point for her whole day!)
Have some blankets or cosy wraps available in case it gets chilly, and consider hiring a few portable heaters if your garden ceremony is in spring or autumn.
Make it personal
One of the joys of a garden wedding is how easy it is to make it feel like yours. From handpicked flowers in jam jars to homemade bunting or a ceremony arch your uncle built, the details can reflect your style and story. And don’t forget to consider your music and/or musicians too! They may need access to electricity and shade/cover if playing live. Sophie and George made great provision for their mesmeric flamenco guitarist in the garden of their family home and created a Spanish-themed canopy for him for the ceremony which was transported to just outside the marquee for the wedding reception. It worked a treat!
Your celebrant ceremony can be just as personal. We can include your favourite music, stories about how you met and the promises you want to make to each other. It’s a chance to celebrate love in a setting that already holds memories for you and your family or will become one.
Plan for comfort
A few thoughtful touches go a long way. Make sure your guests know what to expect, especially if they’ll be walking on grass or sitting outside for a while. You might want to offer cushions, insect repellent, a paper fan or even a basket of flip-flops if people are in heels. Portable toilets can be hired if needed, and some even come with mirrors and proper sinks.
A garden wedding in Yorkshire offers intimacy, warmth and plenty of charm. Whether it’s a small celebration surrounded by close family or a lively gathering with friends under the stars, your garden ceremony can be a reflection of everything you value. Sophie and Jamie incorporated a cosy fire pit with seating around it as their wedding afternoon moved into dusk and then dark. It was enchanting as people gathered around it, keeping comfortably warm and sharing stories of the wonderful day they were all enjoying. Why not offer marsh mellows for toasting too – who wouldn’t want to do that?!
