Celebrant vs Registrar: What’s the Difference and Which Is Right for You?

by | Mar 1, 2026 | Weddings

Celebrant vs Registrar? Planning a wedding comes with lots of decisions, and one of the most important is who will lead your ceremony. If you’re getting married in Yorkshire or beyond, you might be wondering whether to choose a celebrant or a registrar. It’s a common question, and the answer depends on the kind of ceremony you want.

I’ve spoken with many couples who didn’t know they had a choice at first. So here’s a simple guide to help you understand the differences between a celebrant and a registrar, and how to decide which option suits you best. My aim is for you to make an informed choice to best suit you and your style.

What is a registrar?

A registrar is employed by the local council to carry out legal marriages and civil partnerships. They work from register offices or approved venues like hotels and country houses. Registrar ceremonies follow a set script, with only limited options for readings or personal vows. No “religious” elements are allowed (Prayers or blessings) and registrars do exactly as their name suggests – they “register” your marriage, just as you go to the registry office to registrar a birth or a death and then have a ceremony at a different time afterwards.

Registrars are perfect if you want a simple legal ceremony with minimal fuss. Lisa and Tom chose to have the registrars come to the gorgeous Thicket Priory to register their marriage in the morning, and then we had their joyful, relaxed and warm bespoke wedding ceremony in the afternoon with their family and friends. Naesan and Bernie, who lived abroad and had limited time in the UK, chose to do the same at Grantley Hall and that worked perfectly for them too.

It’s all about “best fit” for you and whether or not you are looking for a more personal ceremony delivered by a celebrant whom you have got to know over the months leading up to, and on, your all-important wedding day.

So for couples looking to make their ceremony more personal, a celebrant might be a better fit.

What is a celebrant?

A celebrant is an independent professional who creates and delivers bespoke wedding ceremonies. The key word here is “bespoke.” With a celebrant, there are no templates, no standard wording and no rules about where or how your ceremony should take place.

Want an outdoor wedding in the Yorkshire Dales? A symbolic ceremony in a family garden? A relaxed wedding in a barn near Leeds with your dog as the ring bearer? Mark and Vicky chose to have Pickle, their beloved spaniel, to bound down the aisle with their wedding rings when they had their wedding celebration at Lodge Farm before we all sang, “Don’t Stop me Now” by Queen (some bridesmaids even joined enthusiastically in with the head-banging air-guitar solo which was completely wonderful and made for epic “material “captures” for the photographer, as you can imagine!)

Emma and Joe chose to have a symbolic sand ceremony, with the romantic “Songbirds” by Eva Cassidy music being played and during which each member of their families poured coloured sand into an engraved 3D picture frame to represent the joining of two families to create a unique sand picture whose grains can never be separated. This meant that the ceremony lasted for 50 minutes – no problem for me as a celebrant who only presents one ceremony per day. It was VERY emotional and has given them a wonderful keepsake of their wedding day.

Yes, a celebrant can help you make that happen.

Can a celebrant legally marry us?

In England, celebrant-led ceremonies aren’t currently legal marriages on their own. Most couples who choose a celebrant take care of the legal side separately at their local register office – often with just a couple of witnesses and a simple, no-frills appointment. After that, you’re free to celebrate your wedding in whatever way feels most meaningful to you. All of my couples choose to celebrate their wedding anniversary each year on the date of their wedding day and not on the day they registered their marriage.

It’s a case of separating the two – the legal bit from the actual celebration – without diminishing the importance of doing both. That way, your wedding ceremony can be exactly what you want it to be, in the location you love, with all the people (and words) that matter most to you.

Celebrant vs Registrar – What are the key differences?

Celebrant vs Registrar – here’s a quick comparison:

Feature Registrar Celebrant
Legal marriage Yes No (legal part done separately)
Personalised ceremony Limited Fully bespoke
Ceremony location Register office or licensed venue only Anywhere you choose
Choice of words/vows Set script with minor changes Entirely your own
Time and attention Often short and timed Fully focused on you and your story

Celebrant vs Registrar – So which is right for you?

If your priority is getting legally married in one simple step, and you’re happy with a short, standard ceremony, a registrar might be the right choice. But if you want a wedding ceremony that reflects who you are, with words that tell your story and a setting that feels meaningful, a celebrant ceremony is a beautiful way to make your day unforgettable.

Choosing a celebrant means choosing freedom, flexibility and a wedding ceremony crafted just for you. Whether you’re planning a hotel wedding in Leeds, a garden wedding in the Yorkshire countryside or a symbolic wedding at a castle, I’ll work with you to bring your vision to life.

If that sounds like your kind of celebration, I’d love to hear from you.
